This is a very viable new map:

Eh? Eh? We don't have an America map yet, so...

In-ter-es-ting... lots of territories, looks about 80, but a layout proven playable.

The traditional labelling methods wouldn't work for such a world's flash-map. Numbers will fit, but territory names would need to go elsewhere. Perhaps when the mouse hovers over one, the active territory is highlighted, and the territory's name appears in the Gulf of Mexico or somewhere to the side.

Well Tiki, you up for making another map?

We'll have to see about that... I just might.

But some other stuff demands attention, like... What do we do at Canada and Mexico? Probably leave them out of play, right? (Unoccupiable lands have never been done before... so I guess this map could introduce a visual cue to mark zones excluded from play.)

Well... you could simply shade Mexico and Canada out or something.

Or divvy up Canada or Mexico your own way.

Some territories may have to be consolidated. Since that is alot of frontage..

A better map.

At my estimates, it's probably over a hundred territories. Way too much frontage.

Ahh, thank you for that much better link.

Well, there's nothing of strategic importance in Canada so it'd be best to shade it out :-P

Although Mexico is much more doable, I'd hate to ignore just one section. Then it'd feel weird and asymmetrical. So I think the best option is to keep it civil...war. Sandwich the 48 states in between neutral lands.
